Stephen Lane
Stephen Lane attended the University of New Mexico School of Law, where he received the A.H. McLeod Award for Excellence in Advocacy and the Roehl Advocacy Award. In addition to his law practice, he has continued to be involved with the law school community and has served as an adjunct professor for both the Evidence and Trial Practice course and the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. In addition to educating law students, Stephen has presented continuing legal education courses on trial skills for the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Corinne Wolfe Center for Child and Family Justice, and has been part of the faculty for the law school’s Taking and Defending Depositions continuing education class since 2012.
Stephen‘s legal career has been spent almost exclusively in litigation. He has worked in both the felony division of the Public Defender's office and the Major Crimes Unit of the Second Judicial District Attorney’s office, where he prosecuted homicides, sex crimes, and crimes against children. He has also spent more than a decade in private practice, where he continued to represent clients charged with serious felony offenses, in addition to representing clients involved in complex civil litigation. While most cases resolve through negotiation and settlement, when an agreement cannot be reached, the matter has to be resolved at trial. Stephen has tried more than fifty felony cases before juries, and a similar number of civil cases before judges, juries, and arbitrators.
